Darwin Port faces strike action as workers unanimously endorse industrial action

Workers at Darwin Port have unanimously voted to support protected industrial action, raising the possibility of strikes as early as next week.

The vote reflects growing frustration among port employees, who are seeking a fair outcome in ongoing enterprise bargaining negotiations. The Maritime Union of Australia says workers have continued to support the port’s strong performance while facing what it describes as unreasonable demands from management.

Darwin Port recorded an EBITDA of $42.4 million, up from $34 million the previous year, while revenue reportedly increased by 25%. The port also received the 2025 “Port or Terminal of the Year” award, with its workforce recognised as an important factor in that success.

Employees are seeking:

  • Annual wage increases of 5% over four years
  • A $5,000 sign-on payment
  • Superannuation contributions two percentage points above the statutory minimum
  • Protection against new job titles being used to remove positions from the enterprise agreement

The union says it has already reached agreement on several issues and is prepared to accept a four-year agreement ending on 30 June 2030. However, negotiations remain unresolved over several key matters.

MUA representatives said there is still time to prevent industrial action, but responsibility now rests with Darwin Port management to present an agreement workers can accept. Strike timing and details have not yet been confirmed, although action could begin in approximately one week.
